Description

From observations in social psychology, stereotyping is described as an oversimplified generalised belief about a group, and the people we subconsciously ascribe to it.  While interconnected, these concepts are often misunderstood as one thing, however stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination are three different and distinct mind behaviours, but why do some people classify and judge others? In this highly illuminating module, a full spotlight is focused, not only on observable human behaviours, but uniquely, on the unconscious biases that motivate them.  You will learn about influential psychological research, such as Tajfel’s Social Identity Theory and Sherif’s ‘Robber’s Cave’ experiment, to understand why people categorize and judge others. The module also uncovers strategies for reducing discrimination and introduces a groundbreaking theory on the root causes of racism, as theorised by Carole Sawo, who presents this module.

By taking this class, you’ll gain deeper insights into the unconscious psychological processes and group dynamics that lead to judgement, exclusion, and conflict. The knowledge acquired can be applied to enhance interactions, foster more harmonious relationships, and offer a solid foundation for personal, professional, and collective growth. This learning is particularly invaluable for those in education, social work, and any field where understanding human behaviour, and reducing conflict, is crucial.
