Psychopathology is described as the scientific study of abnormal behaviours, perceptions, thoughts, and experiences. Traditionally categorised by symptom onset and discussed in psychiatry and abnormal psychology, research examines genetic factors, and the impact of childhood trauma and life events for causational explanations of emergent maladaptive disorders. In any enquiry into abnormality, we first need to agree on a definition of what is normal?
In this highly fascinating class, you will learn about the traditional definitions and categorisation of different psychopathologies, the biological, behavioural, cognitive, and psychodynamic approaches, and methods of treating psychological disorders. With discussion on cognitive disorders, such as agoraphobia, delusions, schizophrenia, psychosis, learned helplessness, and the different approaches to treatment, you will learn about new contemporary theories of schizophrenia, depression and suicide, uniquely developed and explained by Carole Sawo teaching this module, that offers a different perspective beyond the scientific approach and medicalised models.
