Description

Sex and gender are two different things, but what defines them?  Are we definable?  In an ever-changing world view of personal identity, never before have our descriptions and beliefs about our individual sexual identity and our gender identity and preferences been so openly discussed, and privately enquired.  Why then, are people still confused about these important concepts? Beginning in child psychology and early years development, with clear descriptions and distinctions of sex and gender, in this module, you will learn about the biological factors in foetal development, genetic inheritance, psychological influences in early years development, gender schema formation, and social-psychological theories.

    • Examine Biological Factors in Gender Development: Genetic and physiological influences on gender identity
    • Study Chromosomes and Foetal Development: Chromosomal differences and early developmental processes
    • Define Androgyny: The concept of androgyny and its implications for gender identity
    • Explore Gender Identity Disorder: Clinical perspectives, gender dysphoria and treatment
    • Analyse Psychological Case Studies in Gender Development: Case studies exploring gender development and identity formation
    • Investigate a New Psychoanalytic Theory of Gender Identity: A new psychoanalytic perspective on the development of gender identity
    • Learn about Gender Schema Theory and Schema Formation: How cognitive processes influence gender identity, behaviour and beliefs
    • Examine Individual Differences in Gender Development: How personal differences influence gender development
    • Assess Observational and Sociological Influences: How society and observation influence gender identity and development
    • Explore Psychosexual Stages of Development: Freud’s psychosexual stages and their historical relevance to gender psychology
