On Rejection

People do all sorts of compromising, bargaining, even begging, to avoid being rejected.  But why?  Why does it feel so painful, and where does that pain come from?   Is there anything we can learn from rejection, from being so broken open?  Is there a way of transforming the experience from one of separation into liberation, and eventual unification?
